Look after your teeth and gums at home by following these simple steps:
• Brushing your teeth twice a day with fluoride toothpaste helps to prevent tooth decay and gum disease.
• Brush gently in circular motions - brushing from side to side or up and down, or brushing too hard can lead to abrasion and sensitivity.
• After brushing just spit out the toothpaste - do not rinse as this lessens the effect of the fluoride.
• It is recommended that you replace your toothbrush every three months or sooner if the bristles become worn or splay out to the sides as the brush
will be less effective.
• If you have gum disease it is recommended that you change your brush every six weeks as harmful bacteria and fungi can grow on the brush and
continue to cause problems in your mouth.
• Floss or use interdental brushes to clean in between your teeth every day. Food can get caught between your teeth where your brush cannot reach. If
it is not removed it can lead to decay.
Use a tongue cleaner (also known as a tongue scraper) when you clean your teeth to clean the surface of your tongue. Bacteria, fungi and decaying food
can build up on your tongue causing bad breath. Cleaning your tongue will not only help keep your breath fresh but also removes potentially harmful bacteria
and fungi from your mouth.
